Married Life and Single Life – part 4 – The Lord’s Mission of Submission

God is relentlessly trying to get us to submit to His will for our lives.

As our example, Jesus, the Son of God, submitted to the Heavenly Father. Jesus submitted all the way to the cross, as it was the Father’s will for the Son to die for our sins. The Apostle John wrote, “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.” (1 John 4:14)

In a similar way, we too are to deny self, take up our cross daily and to follow God as our Lord (Luke 9:23). God’s goal is our submission to His Authority and His Lordship in our lives; He simply has an order to His ways (1 Corinthians 14:40). This order is also seen in marriage, where God simply does things in an orderly fashion, and we are to submit to God and to obey God in our marriages. The wife has a role, and the husband has a role, as each submits to God’s authority and God’s leading them in life, in marriage and in family. This is marriage done God’s way, and the only way that God can truly bless a marriage and family (Ephesians 5:21-33)!

Peter gave us the beautiful illustration of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. We should know that the Hebrews knew that God changed her name from Sarai (“dominative”) to Sarah (“princess”) (Genesis 17:15). As a wife, Sarah became an example of a woman with inner beauty, “which is very precious in the sight of God” (1 Peter 3:1-6).

Another great reason for us to simply obey God’s authority and order to things, is “because of the angels” (1 Corinthians 11:10). When the fallen angel Lucifer disobeyed God and rebelled against God’s authority (Isaiah 14:12-15), certainly the other angels saw and remember his rebellion and disobedience, thus this reference in 1 Corinthians 11:10, “because of the angels,” as the angels can observe and see our choices in life. This should bring a healthy fear of God, to know that the angels – as well as God Himself – can see us at all times! Now, the devil tries to disrupt God’s Marriage Picture of Jesus Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:32), and tries to get things out of order, by having wives not submit to the spiritual leadership of their husbands, and tries to get husbands to not love and lead their wives, by not teaching them God’s Word.

Let’s not let the devil trick us nor deceive us! We must submit ourselves fully to God’s Authority and His Lordship in our lives!
