In Galatians 6:1-5, Paul tells us to “Bear one another’s burdens” and shows us how. By helping to restore someone who has fallen to sin, we fulfill Christ’s command in the New Covenant to “love one another.”

It’s a simple yet profound thing that each of us can do, that invites us to live out real Christian love by supporting each other through the challenges of life.

What does it mean to bear one another’s burdens? It means coming alongside fellow believers who are struggling—whether it’s sin or tough trials in life—and offering them help, encouragement, and prayer. As Christians, we aren’t called to carry our own burdens only; rather, each Christian is called in the body of Christ to share the load with one another.

This is what Jesus Christ did for us, and it’s this kind of love that proves to the world that we are truly followers of Christ and His ways.

Bearing burdens is more than just physical help; it can involve emotional and spiritual support. We are called by God to help one another to go through heart healing and restoration.

Sometimes, just listening and offering gentle words of encouragement and prayer can provide enormous comfort to someone feeling weighed down by life. Galatians 6 reminds us that this shared responsibility strengthens the community of faith and fulfills the law of Christ, which is to love one another.

God reminds us that, just like the disciples who would fish and then have to mend their nets, we too need to fish for souls and then be used by God to fix and restore their broken lives.

Importantly, we are also instructed to approach this task in a spirit of gentleness and grace. When we help fix someone’s life who has been overcome by sin, we are reminded of our own weaknesses, and must examine our own hearts and not judge. The sin of pride makes it easy to judge. But it’s Christlike to help fix and to restore lives.

Each and every Christian is called to “bear his own load,” meaning we must strengthen our walks with God’s grace even as we help strengthen others.

Let us all be intentional to encourage and help one another, lifting each other up in love and grace, just as Jesus does daily with us.
