As we learn the story of Abraham in Genesis 22, we see one of the most amazing tests of faith ever recorded in the Bible. God asked Abraham to do something extremely hard! He told him to offer his son Isaac as a burnt offering. This was a faith test, but also a lesson about love and worship.
Imagine how Abraham must have felt. Isaac was the son God had promised to him after many years of waiting. Abraham loved Isaac very much, but the test was to trust God even more. When God tests us, it’s not to hurt us but to grow our faith and to show if we have a fear of God.
Abraham’s willingness to obey God reveals his deep love and worship. Even though it was difficult, Abraham put God first. He believed that God would provide, even if it meant giving up something precious. And just before Abraham went through with it, God stopped him. God provided a ram to sacrifice instead of Isaac, proving His faithfulness to provide as well as mercy.
This story teaches us that worship isn’t just about singing songs or being in a church service. Worship is about trusting God with our whole hearts and being willing to obey God no matter what. It reminds us that God sometimes tests us, but He always provides a way through.
Genesis 22 is where God begins to prophetically tell the story of how later on, another father – the Heavenly Father – will take another Only Son, Jesus, the Only Begotten Son of God.
This child of promise wouldn’t be Isaac, but would be Jesus, the ultimate Child of Promise. And as Isaac was likely in his 30’s at this time – it’s just like Jesus, who would be 33 when He died at the cross.
And the Heavenly Father would offer up His Only Son, Jesus, as a sacrifice for our sins at the cross at Calvary. Jesus would remarkably be brought to this same area that Abraham and Isaac came to. That area today is called Jerusalem.
When we love God more than the things of this world, our faith grows stronger. Like Abraham, we learn to trust God’s promises, even when the future looks uncertain. So next time you face a hard situation, remember Abraham’s story. God may be testing your faith in order to help you to spiritually grow. And when your life must totally trust in God, He loves you so much that He will always provide what you need. You’ll begin to see Him as the LORD who will provide.
Let’s worship God with all our hearts, trusting Him completely, just like Abraham did.
