Christ’s Resurrection and Great Commission: preach the Gospel and make disciples
There is power in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ!
There is also power in the resurrected life of a disciple of Jesus!
First Christ creates a follower who is called to be with Him (Mark 3:14), and then after discipling the individual, He then sends them off to preach the Gospel and to make disciples. Discipleship is hard work, because it involves much “heart work.” Discipleship takes a long time, and nothing develops overnight. In fact, for the original disciples that Jesus Himself poured out into, they had already been following Jesus closely for over 3 years, almost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with constant fellowship with Jesus and with His other disciples.
After Christ’s Resurrection, He then gives His disciples what we call the Great Commission, which basically is to wait for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:5-8), to be able to preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15) and to Make Disciples (Matthew 28:19-20). Christ’s Great Commission, and His Mission and Vision for His Church still stands today! Every true born again Christian is still called to be discipled. The church at large is still called and empowered by the Lord to make disciples.
“Evangelism alone is not the commission; after people are won, they should be baptized, which suggests a local church fellowship. They should also be taught, which suggests the teaching and preaching of the Word of God. Please keep in mind that our commission is not simply “to win souls.” It is to “make disciples”—which includes winning them, bringing them into a Christian fellowship, and building them up in the faith.” (Warren Wiersbe)
