So far, we’ve been journeying through this topic of how to have God’s peace for a while now and it’s for good reason.
We learned how to have God’s peace, in attaining it and maintaining it.
Then we saw the next complementary topic which was contentment.

Peace has to be tested
Now, every Christian must be brought to this crossroad in life.
This is the place where I might start to get fuzzy feet at times, instead of a firm stance that’s solid in God’s will.
I love God’s peace.
But it has to be tested, doesn’t it!?
It may get so tough at times to stay anchored within God’s peace, as He leads me through the hills and valleys of life.
Furthermore, because the Lord Jesus wants to mature me, He challenges me if I’m still willing to follow Him where His peace leads me.
And will I remain content?
Content and not complain
The challenge is to be content, and trust in Him no matter what.
To follow without whining and complaining.
To be content with the outcome that the Lord brings. And it’s in His way, and in His timing.
Why? Because Jesus is not only Savior, but He is Lord!
Furthermore, as Paul gives personal testimony, contentment is “learned.” (Philippians 4:11)
Learning by doing
This means that to know contentment with God, it can only be learned by doing!
It’s an experiential knowledge; contentment can never be learned only in a classroom!
Ouch! That’s where many fall off the trail and never move into maturity.
How do you know you can handle this?
But how do are we to know that we can make it, and that God will pull us through today’s trials?
Look at what Paul writes next!
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
The context here makes this clear.
Paul is saying that:
- He can maintain a life of God’s peace
- He can be content no matter what his obedience to God brings
- Paul has learned to accomplish these things through Jesus Christ
- Jesus Christ gives Paul strength to do all of this
Furthermore, it’s interesting to note:
- Having a “can do” attitude is actually in the Bible!
- God is the original “positive thinker”
- God wrote this principle, and it is God who upholds this principle for all humanity
