The fruit of the Spirit is love, and loving one another is Christ’s main command in this New Covenant time. If we love, it’s proof to the world that we are followers of Jesus.

In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul highlights love as the first and main evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work in a believer’s heart and life. God’s agape love isn’t just emotional. God’s love is selfless and sacrificial, just like the love shown to us through Jesus Christ.

This agape love is part of God’s character, and His love reflects God’s nature. God is a loving God and it is who He is.

When we learn about the fruit of the Spirit, we see qualities of who the Holy Spirit is, how He operates, and what we are to look for as evidence – or fruit – that we are walking in the Spirit. The agape love of God is the main thing, because God Himself is love.

God’s love overwhelms us as we receive His love for us as shown through Jesus Christ and Him crucified for our sins. We then give back ourselves to God, in loving God back, as we love Him because He loved us first.

And by spending much time with our Lord, He also equips us with His love so that we can love one another. This is real ministry, as empowered by the Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is the overflow, out of our hearts, of one overflowing with God’s love, grace and mercy. This is the fruit of God’s Spirit pouring forth out of the heart of Christians walking close with Christ. He pours out His Living Water out of our hearts, just like Jesus promised in John 7:37-39.

God’s love transforms how we connect with others, and His love motivates us to act with the grace of God and forgiveness—even when it’s difficult to do so.

The fruit of the Spirit, beginning with love, contrasts sharply with the works of the flesh. God’s love compels us in the Christian life to live with a selfless love, just like Jesus did..
