How to Forgive According to the Bible

When I tried learning how to forgive, boy did I fail. I was told somewhere along the way that I had to be like God and “forgive and forget.”

Well as you’ve likely guessed, I failed to “forgive and forget.”

Probably just like you did too, am I right?

But when I studied the Bible for myself, God’s Word brought an enormous amount of clarity!

The error wasn’t in my efforts to try. It was from bad teaching that I picked up from loving but misguided friends.

My breakthrough came when God taught me directly in His Word that forgiveness is all about grace. His grace.

Once I understood this principle things were so much more easy! This helped me to finally walk in God’s grace in one of life’s toughest issues.

HERE’S HOW TO FORGIVE ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE

✅ 1. KNOW THAT GOD’S GRACE FORGAVE YOU AND SAVED YOU

Your eternal salvation and forgiveness of sins is by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus Christ and His work alone.

This is God’s free gift and you cannot do any good works to receive salvation or forgiveness.

You will never deserve His forgiveness, but because of God’s grace He has freely given you His forgiveness. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Unless you can first fully receive God’s forgiveness and grace given to you through Jesus, you will never be able to truly give grace to others.

Many Christians still struggle with this. They’re already saved, but trapped in the bondage of legalism. Get healed and delivered!

✅ 2. KNOW THAT YOUR ABILITY TO FORGIVE DEPENDS UPON GRACE

The word God uses for you to be “forgiving” one another in Colossians 3:13 and Ephesians 4:32 has its root in “grace.”

God is telling you that your ability to be able to forgive others is dependent upon “grace.”

Sure, your pride says the person doesn’t deserve to be forgiven. But God’s grace flows from the character of the Giver; grace is independent from the worthiness of the recipient.

Just as you’ll never deserve to be given God’s forgiveness, nobody else deserves forgiveness either. That’s why it’s “grace.”

God gives you His grace, and you give His grace to others.

✅ 3. FORGIVE OTHERS BY “GIVING FREELY”

This same word for “forgiving” can also mean “give freely.”

God gave you forgiveness freely, so you’re expected to also “give freely.”

The world’s counsel says to forgive only when the other person says sorry to you first; that’s conditional forgiveness. But God says to “give freely.” (You’ll need to understand that people may repent before God but never tell you “Sorry.”)

Give forgiveness freely.

✅ 4. DEVELOP A LIFESTYLE OF BEING A FORGIVER

Sure, a Christian can forgive once. Maybe even seven times like how Peter said.

But Jesus said to forgive “up to seventy times seven.” The point is to give unlimited forgiveness. (Matthew 18:21-22)

If you want to be more like Jesus in your forgiveness then you’ll need to develop a lifestyle of being a forgiver.

Believe me, God will give you many opportunities to grow in this area!

Forgiveness according to the Bible is one of the areas that we grow in God’s grace.
