The Truth Will Set You Free

What is the meaning of the truth will set you free? This is often quoted and memorized as a Bible verse. But what did Jesus actually say about the truth will set you free?

I’ve often heard people quote Jesus saying, “you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

But I wasn’t taught the context of this Scripture memory verse.

It’s such a famous saying that we’ve all heard people in the world quote this.

So I was often confused because we’re not taught who said this and who was being spoken to.

Without this, we’re missing valuable context behind this Bible principle.

THE KNOWLEDGE OF TRUTH BRINGS FREEDOM

We often see this principle applied in this simple sense.

That knowing truth brings freedom.

Yes, there is a certain degree of accuracy to that.

But the context of this Scripture text is much, much more powerful!

WHO IS JESUS SPEAKING TO?

Notice the context of how Jesus is speaking this, and who He is speaking this to.

Jesus is speaking to His believers!

He’s not speaking to those who do not believe in Him.

ABIDING IN GOD’S WORD

The context makes this clear, that Jesus is referring to believers who “abide” in His word.

To “abide” can mean “to remain” or “not to depart.” In other words, remain obedient to the words of Jesus.

Notice what Jesus says about those who “abide” in His word: “you are My disciples indeed.”

Yes, you guessed it! A disciple is someone obedient to God’s Word!

WHAT PRECEDES THE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS TRUTH?

A believer who obey God’s Word, thereby being His disciple indeed.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE’RE OBEDIENT TO GOD’S WORD?

“You shall know the truth.”

Just reading the Bible doesn’t bring us to a good knowledge of God’s Word of Truth.

Obeying God’s Word is where we really begin to know God’s Word.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE KNOW THE TRUTH, BY BEING OBEDIENT TO GOD’S WORD?

“The truth shall make you free.”

REAL FREEDOM IN CHRIST IS ONE OF THE MANY REASONS WHY IT’S SUCH A BLESSING TO BE OBEDIENT TO GOD’S WORD!

Be sure to read and obey God’s Word.

This proves you’re a disciple.

You’ll know the truth, because you’re experientially learning God’s Word of Truth.

This “truth shall make you free.”

Share this with someone who needs to know this.

God bless you and see you soon!

Question: As you obey God’s Word how does He reveal truth to you?
