How To Better Handle Anxiety

Sharing Good News With Friends

I used to hate anxiety. I think we all do in some ways. When I was a lot younger, one of my coping mechanisms was to take drugs, get drunk or to throw myself into an immoral relationship.

I think I would do anything to numb myself and not feel the pain.

I was avoiding problems. Especially when God was convicting my heart to follow Him.

So things always turned out worse.

Well, thankfully since then I’ve gotten a lot better. And it’s only because of God’s grace and the power of His Word and His Spirit!

God showed me how to better use anxiety and not let anxiety get the best of me.

What used to make me panic and hide in a cave of depression now is used in more positive ways.

I’ve learned that God wants to bring me to prayer to hear from Him, and to cling to God’s Word in times of trouble.

I can now rest assured that God wants to use these situations to mature me.

He teaches me to seek His peace amidst the chaos that abounds.

This was a huge breakthrough in my life, and it also informs me on how to help others.

HOW CAN YOU BETTER HANDLE ANXIETY?

1. KNOW THAT GOD KNOWS YOUR ANXIETY

God say in Proverbs 12:25 – “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.”

There are other Scriptures to look at, but we’ll start with this.

God created you. He knows that you’ll have anxieties as a part of daily life.

But God wants you to come to Him because He has your solutions.

Knowing that God knows and wants to help you – that alone can bring you hope!

✅ 2. KNOW WHAT ANXIETY IS

In Proverbs 12:25, the root of this word for “anxiety” means “to fear.”

God knows these things cause fear, and that they can hurt your faith walk with Him.

Train yourself to detect these fears early on, so that you’re aware of it.

✅ 3. GOD WARNS YOU ABOUT ANXIETY

He says “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression.”

This is the root cause of a lot of depression.

If you let these fears keep your heart in bondage, then they’ll lead to negative patterns that often cause depression.

✅ 4. USE ANXIETY AS A PROMPTING FOR WORSHIP

This word for “depression” is most often translated in the Bible as related to “worship.”

It speaks of causing a person “to bow down.”

Abraham was tested by God to offer up his son, Isaac, as a burnt offering.

In Genesis 22:5 – Abraham said that he and Isaac would go and “worship.” (it’s the same Hebrew word)

Your anxieties can lead to depression. Or they can be used by God to train you to “worship!”

Learn to use anxiety as a prompting for worship.

✅ 5. STUDY GOD’S WORD TO BETTER HANDLE ANXIETY

God’s counsel to you in Proverbs 12:25 is this: “But a good word makes it glad.”

Sure, positive thoughts help a little.

But ultimately it’s the reading and studying of God’s Word that uplifts your heart and “makes it glad.”

In order for you to overcome anxiety – and no longer be overcome by anxiety – you must learn to daily feed yourself all of God’s Word.

Stay in God’s Word, stay off TV, don’t consume much “news” because most of the world’s news is bad news and gossip.

Study with a Bible teaching church that teaches through the entire Bible.

✅ 6. STAY IN PRAYER

God tells us that a good word makes our heart “glad” which can also mean “joyful.”

As Psalm 16:11 teaches us – “In Your presence is fullness of joy.”

Stay in prayer with the Lord.

Allow the God of all comfort to soothe your heart with His love, joy and peace.

Find true joy in the Lord and in His Word. Be cautious of your heart being swayed by emotion. That’s the flesh and the unhealed heart.

God can heal you. I’m proof of this.
